If you're not sure of your student's level, here's a guide to help you understand. If you're looking to sign up for a group, it's important to sign up for the correct level, both for your student and the other students in the class. For private lessons, our instructors are able to quickly identify a student's level and be able to teach accordingly. Regardless, it's good for our parents to understand students' current ability and understand the goals that we're trying to more towards.
Our first level is for beginners and is primarily focused on learning breath control. Learning how to safely go under water is the foundation and basis of everything else we teach. It's hard to teach students to be safe in the water without being able to control their breath. The primary goal of teaching students in Preschool level 1 is to help them be comfortable in and under the water.
Questions to help you understand if this is the right level for your student:
-Do they know how to do nose bubbles? No
-Can they go under water safely? No
Once students are able to safely display breath control, we start to teach the principle of buoyancy with front floats, back floats, and natural buoyancy when they jump in water. We also introduce movement with kicks and practice them along with breath control techniques to help students understand what swimming feels like. This builds confidence and understanding in what we're trying to accomplish in a very natural way.
Questions to help you understand if this is the right level for your student:
-Do they know how to do nose bubbles? Yes
-Can they back float independently for 5 seconds? No
When students can float well, we start to teach them the best safety strokes. We believe this level is very important as we teach life-saving techniques that helps students become completely independent in the water. Upon completion of the skills in this level students are ready to advance into stroke development.
Questions to help you understand if this is the right level for your student:
-Do they know how to front float and back float? Yes
-Can they swim short distances (10 feet)? No
Core Level lessons take place in the deep end of the pool. By this time, students should be comfortable and independent in the deep end. We being to learn the basics of backstroke and freestyle, including proper breathing techniques for freestyle. We also introduce treading and other practical skills in the deep end.
Questions to help you understand if this is the right level for your student:
-Are they comfortable in the deep end? Yes
-Can they perform side-breathing? No
In this level, students continue to build strength in their strokes such as freestyle and backstroke. We also introduce breaststroke and butterfly, practicing bits and pieces to build strength before putting it all together. In this level, we focus a lot on building strength and endurance.
Questions to help you understand if this is the right level for your student:
-Can they perform freestyle and backstroke 40 feet? Yes
-Do they know breaststroke and butterfly? No
Students at this point are strong enough and skilled enough to participate in our swim teams. In this level, we help students to continue to build strength and endurance while perfecting all strokes and (as desired) preparing students to swim competitively.
Questions to help you understand if this is the right level for your student:
-Can they perform all 4 strokes well? Yes
